TREATMENT PERIOD

As soon as your employer has collected these documents, the application can be submitted to the one-stop shop – Working in Belgium. The processing time for an application for a European Blue Card is a maximum of 90 days. This period starts from the day the application is received by the competent region.

Have you already stayed at least 12 months (with a European Blue Card) in another EU member state and are you submitting an application for Belgium? Then the processing time is 30 days. The decision on the application must be communicated within these processing times.

You can work for any employer!

With this European Blue Card, you can work for any employer. So, you do not need to apply for a new combined permit if you change employers during this time.

The new employer must inform the Flemish region about the change of employer.

SUMMARY SINGLE PERMIT & EUROPEAN BLUE CARD Discover the differences

What is a combined permit?

If you want to work and live in Belgium, you usually need a combined permit. This is a single document that allows you to work and stay here. Your employer applies for this permit on your behalf. If you receive the permit, you will get an A-card.

What is the European Blue Card?

The European Blue Card is a special permit for highly skilled workers with a higher salary. You will then receive an H-card.

This card has more benefits:

✓ You can change employers faster.

✓ You can work more easily in other EU countries.

✓ Sometimes the rules for family reunification are more flexible.

Note: the conditions are stricter. For example, you must have a higher education degree and earn enough.

Who submits the application?

Your employer submits the application for both cards. You must provide the correct documents.
