EU CITIZEN │ WORKING IN GENK MORE THAN 90 DAYS
Are you an EU citizen? Then you are allowed to travel and work freely in Europe. You do not need a single permit, work card, professional card, or visa.
Are you staying more than 90 days?
Then you must register your presence with the municipality within 10 days. You register and receive the document ‘Annex 19 – Declaration of Registration’.

Are you an EU citizen and staying in Belgium for more than 90 days? Then register within 10 days of arrival at City Genk.

Register at the town hall
Bring all documents immediately with this first registration:
- Valid ID card or valid passport
- Birth certificate
- Any marriage certificate
- Proof of health insurance
- Proof of sufficient own income:
Employment contract: at least 12 hours per week AND longer than 3 months with the same employer
OR
- Proof of self-employment (registration with the Crossroads Bank for Enterprises)
Receipt ‘Attachment 19 – Registration Statement’
Only when you have all the documents with you during this registration at the town hall, you will receive an 'attachment 19 - Certificate of registration'. You will now be registered in the waiting register. This ‘attachment 19’ serves as temporary confirmation during the period when the city checks all documents.
Don’t have all the documents with you? Then you will not receive ‘attachment 19’.
The community police officer is visiting
After your 'appendix 19' has been created, a community officer will come to check if you really live at the given address. Only the community officer can perform and confirm this check.
Document verification
The City investigates whether the submitted documents are correct and complete to make registration in the foreigners' register possible.
Registration in the foreign nationals register
If the documents are correct and complete, the person will be registered in the waiting register or foreigners' register (depending on the situation).
If not all documents were in order → no registration in the foreigners' register will follow.
EU card
If you can submit all requested documents and your file is approved, you will receive a residence permit valid for 5 years: an EU card. If you work via temporary contracts, you will only receive an EU card after you can present 3 payslips or weekly contracts showing that you worked at least 12 hours per week. During these first three months, you will only receive an 'annex 19'.
What has changed since September 1, 2025?
- Previously, you had 90 days to submit your documents.
Now you must bring all documents immediately at your first registration.
Make sure you have an A1 form with you
If you come to work in Belgium from another EU country, you need an A1 form from your home country to prove that you have accumulated sufficient rights to be able to insure yourself against medical costs.
You must submit this A1 form when you join a health insurance fund. You also need this form if, for example, you come to work in Belgium as a posted worker and therefore still fall under the social security system of your home country.
